There's always that one special dog...

I hope the title brought a warm feeling to your heart, if a not a smile to your face. We love all our dogs, each and every single one of them throughout our lives. But there's always one that touches your heart in such a way, you are changed forever. Mine was a retired racing greyhound named Grand Pre. He was a huge brindle greyhound, pictured here with our youngest daughter. When we made that decision to adopt a retired racer, my sister and I drove to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho and met with a group of volunteers. This was in 1994. They had 15 -20 of them to choose from, boys and girls, all colors and sizes! It was arranged for us to arrive at turnout time when there would be volunteers available to help. So many beautiful dogs. Each dog is muzzled with a soft plastic muzzle so they can all be turned out together without any injuries, easily drink water from the large buckets. They all were taking care of business in a large sand pen, so I had crouched down to just watch the interaction to try and pick one that would fit into our family. In a matter of moments this beautiful boy, walked over and laid his head in my lap. I said "that's it, I am done, he picked me". My sister said "Are you sure?" I said "Absolutely!" I called him Tawny, after our family Doberman that helped me earn the High combined trophy in 1972 at the Grandview 4-H fair. He was four years old, and the most loving, dignified dog we'd ever had. We had six wonderful years with him, when at age 10, he developed bone cancer and we had to say good bye, for now. I have other stories from our time together, but those are for another day. What story can you share of your one special dog?.....
